Most countries celebrate Mother’s Day in May. With some exceptions, countries such as Costa Rica, Argentina and Panama have adopted other dates: August 15, third Sunday of October and December 8, respectively.
Regardless of the date, honoring the mother is a very important custom for Latin American families. The family is an important pillar in Latin culture, and mothers play a central role in the family structure. Mother’s Day is an opportunity to honor and thank mothers for their contribution to family unity and stability.
I personally remember that, in Colombia, Mother’s Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm and sincere expressions of love and appreciation. Families across the country take the opportunity to express gratitude and affection toward the maternal figures in their lives. It is common for families to gather for holiday meals, where they share quality time with mothers, grandmothers, and other significant maternal figures.
The church also plays an important role in celebrating Mother’s Day, with many believers attending religious ceremonies to offer prayers for the well-being of their mothers. Schools also join this tradition or who doesn’t remember making cards and gifts in our schools to express our love in a personal and creative way to our mothers.
Latin American society places a strong emphasis on family ties, and Mother’s Day serves as a poignant reminder of the important role that mothers play in shaping the lives of their children. A day filled with warmth, joy and appreciation, whether through thoughtful gestures, heartfelt words or meaningful gifts, Mother’s Day is a beautiful celebration of maternal love and the enduring influence of mothers on society. So to all the mothers of the NWPTS community, congratulations and may our Lord Jesus Christ bless you always.
